My synopsis

I Spy the Boy Next Door is a novel about Mallory who is homeschooled. For as long as she can remember she’s had an eye for her next door neighbour’s son Troy. Mallory convinces her mum to spend her senior year in the local high school and not being homeschooled anymore. Malory has to face the many new challenges as well as the high schools unwritten rules and Troy! This is a book about love friendship secrets and about facing the world and what scares you.

My thoughts

Overall I was satisfied with this book. It lived up to my expectations which were neither very high or low. This was a mediocre read with its ups and downs.

At the beginning I had some issues with Troy’s and Mallory’s connection and relationship.I am a sucker for the bad boy good girl trope but this didn’t seem that authentic It wasn’t destiny or their characteristics that brought them together but what seemed like the force of the author’s hand. They had to have a relationship so it could fit into the story. I would have loved to see a more original set up or meetcute that didn’t seem to so forced.

With that sad I really enjoy Troy and Mallory’s relationship for the rest of the book and the cute and original scenes came. Along with a plot twist! I hadn’t seen this book take such a thrilling and dramatic turn but it did. I think it gave it some edge. It turned this classical trope into something different something less predictable. I really enjoyed all the twists and turns but some I predicted beforehand. I don’t want to say anymore in fear of spoiling.

I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a light quick and pleasing read.

Have you heard of this book or maybe even read it? I would love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I haven’t heard of I Spy the Boy Next Door, but now that I’ve read your review I’m fairly intrigued by the book now. I’m going to have to see whether or not the library has it.

Great review! I don’t like it either when authors try to write something as if it were casual but comes off as forced, too. So I’m going to keep my expectations of I Spy the Boy Next Door low as well.
