My DNF Pile

So, I have decided to make a little post about my DNF (did not finish) pile. I always do my very best to finish the books I’m reading. But if I fail anyway I feel a certain amount of guilt and even embarrassed. Why? Because I consider myself a bookworm and book lover.  And not finishing a book isn’t exactly a typical characteristic for a book lover (or maybe it is… well that is up for a discussion another day.).

However, I am pleased that my DNF pile at the moment only consists of four books. Here is my DNF pile:

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

I tried to read this book many years ago before I even considered myself a bookworm. I did not finish this book because I thought it was boring… First of all, I thought it was too much of a high school cliche and second of all, it was very repetitive. It felt like the main character died and came back to life so many times. I was like, just move on already!

Theodore Boone: The Abduction by John Grisham

I bought this book as part of a “buy one, get one half price” offer. This was my very first crime novel ever. I had moderate expectations since it is written by John Grisham, but I didn’t even read 50 pages… It just never really caught my attention and I felt I was just thrown into a word with a lot of already established characters, who didn’t get any “introduction” to. Embarrassingly enough I just now discovered that this book is the second book in the series about Theodore Boone… No wonder I felt so lost *awkward*

Anyway this book was the reason it took me six years to touch a crime/mystery book again :)) (It was One Of Us Is Lying you can read my review here)

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia

Probably the book(s) I feel most guilty and embarrassed about not finishing or reading. Why? Because my mom bought me all four books. Like the whole box set!… I read maybe 20-50 pages of the first book and haven’t touched any of them since. I feel so bad. Sorry, mom.

Have you read the series? Should I give it another try?

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

This is the most recent book I did no finish. I really wanted to like this book but I didn’t. I did not not like it. It was just too slow in the beginning. I started the book not feeling 100%  emotional committed (which I typical must feel). and gave easily up. I have heard so much about Morgan Matson and her books, all in a positive way. So I think the chance of rereading this book or another book by her is quite likely!
Have you read any of her books? What is your favourite?

Have you read any of these books? Wich books are on your DNF pile?

  1. Before I Fall has been on my TBR for quite a while. However, I recently removed it because I felt like I was not going to like it. And I think I made a good choice!

  2. I already read Before I fall and I can see the whole Highschool cliché haha at first I wasn’t too sure about it but I really enjoyed reading the last few times she got to get back! 😀

  3. I also read Before I fall, years ago, and I have to say you did not miss much. Not because I didn’t like it, I felt then that it was OK…. but because now (in about 5 years of distance) I can’t remember anything about what happened in it 😀 It’s only the several-times-dying-and-coming-back thing that comes back to the surface… It didn’t make a huge impression. (Looks like it didn’t make one at all :D) So I don’t think you miss anything by not reading it through.

    1. Hehe okay I am glad I didn’t miss that much. There are sometimes these mediorce books that are really hard to remeber anything about a few years later… 😉

  4. I have read all of Morgan Matson’s book except Since You’ve Been Gone because I know it’s a sad one and I haven’t found myself in that mood. But I would totally recommend her other work. I can honestly say she is my favorite contemporary author hands down. Pick up Unexpected Everything maybe, it was the first book I read by her and it is perfect for the summer. Great post!

  5. Before I Fall has been on my TBR for a while, but I have no idea when I’m going to read it. I’m sorry that you ended up DNF’ing it! Have you watched the movie? Maybe you’d like it more than the book. I’ve watched the movie and I thought it was ok.
Beautiful Creatures and Since YOu’ve Been Gone are both long books so I can understand why people may not read the books. — I’ve read Beautiful Creatures and I honestly remember enjoying it. I know that the first 20-50 pages are like “ehhh where is the story going?!” but if you like fantasy then I definitely recommend trying Beautiful Creatures again!
I’ve read 3 of Morgan Matson’s books, and I’ve enjoyed reading their stories. I suggest reading Matson’s books when you want a summer vibe.

    1. There is a movie?! Well I will definitely have to check that out!
I like fantasy so I will consider to try it again. I mean when you have the entire series it is a bit stupid 😉
Well summer is alomost upon me, so maybe I will give one of Matson’s other books a try :))

      1. Heads-up – a friend of mine who has seen the movie thought it wasn’t great and to only watch it if one really liked the book and even then not to expect much. Soooo, probably not for you 😂

  6. Noooo, Before I Fall, really? I actually have a copy sitting right in front of me, my best friend recommended it to me, I read it a few years ago and loved it! I guess I can see why you wouldn’t like it if you found the whole coming-back thing repetitive and boring. I, however, enjoyed trying to figure out what she could change the next time!

    1. I am glad your friend and you liked it! Sometimes I actually wonder what she changed and if she then continued to live 🤔 maybe i will read a resume but I don’t think will pick up the book again.
