October Round-Up 2019

Hey there!
In October I have been fighting a massive reading and blogging slump. I just haven’t had the motivation and been quite busy looking for a job as well. The good news is that I have found a job and actually already had my first day! Yay! I also believe I have made it through my reading slump which is such a relief! I think more has happened on the personal front than the reading front. Nevertheless here is my round up for October. :)))

Books read this month

Shadow Frost by Coco Ma πŸ–€

Sadly this wasn’t the best reading experience for me. I received Shadow Frost as an eARC through Netgalley and was really looking forward to this book. However it ended up as a big disappointment. I had many issues with this book and the only reason I finished it was because it was an ARC and my first and I didn’t want to dnf my first ever ARC.

And I Darken by Kiersten White πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€

After reading Shadow Frost I needed a book to remind how great the written form can be. I decided to read And I Darken in hope of it would do that. And it did! What a book! I don’t think I have ever read a book so beautiful written. It was truly something. Every word and sentence were so smoothly connected. And the imagery is amazing. Action and phase wise, I don’t think this book is for everyone. But it gives you time to know and feel the characters. Ass well, it touches on so many important themes and aspects of society. You should definitely read this book if you want to be spoiled.

Spin The Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

I don’t really know how I feel about this book at the moment. I enjoy reading it and I feel fairly entertained but its hasn’t really gripped me yet. Not as much as I have wanted it to anyway. I am about half way through and I am really looking forward to see what will happen. The writing is smooth btw.

Books reviewed this month

Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neill πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€
This book took me the longest to review ever. I was quite affected and touched by this book so I needed some time to collect my thoughts. This is such a great book but it is a though read and not for the fainted hearts. I would still recommend everyone to read it!

Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€
This was a decent fantasy read. It had some obvious issues; some cliche tropes but also some original features.

Shadow Frost by Coco Ma πŸ–€
I don’t know what to say. I wasn’t a fan of this book. Check out my review if you want to find out in more detail.

Other things on Bookish Stuff

Why North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell Still Matters Today
I was inspired for this post by my Victorian Period class I took last semester. In this class we read and discussed North & South among many other Victorian classics. I believe North & South have a say in todays society. Read my post to find out why.

5 Books I Plan to Read This Fall
I am really bad at sticking to tbrs. Every time I make a tbr usually with 10 books I only read approximately four of them maybe less. In hope of not going astray I have shorten my fall tbr down to the five books I most want to read. Let’s see if i can stick to it. *fingers crossed*

Around the blogosphere

The ‘Strong’ Female Character Archetype @The Caffeinated Reader
I know this post is from the beginning of September but I just believe it is too important not to have in my round-up post. I think it will benefit us all if we thought a bit about female archetypes and female characters. You don’t have to be “masculine” to matter or have a say. Female “qualities” are great as well and should be more appreciated.

What’s up for November?

One of the things I am most looking forward to in November is the danish book convention Bog Forum 2019. For three days an entire exhibition center will be filled with books and other bookish stuff. It is going to be great! I will “only” be going for two out of the three days but I pretty sure that will be enough for as there is plenty to do and see. ;))))

‘Speak’ is next on my fall tbr which I am very excited about. I am hoping to be moved an inspired. Ia also hope to write my review for ‘And I Darken’ and share my excitement about it.

Best,
Nicoline

How was your October? What did you read, write and do of bookish stuff?

  1. Big oof to Shadow Frost being your first ARC and finishing it because you didn’t want to DNF your first. The universe really gave you a bad card in that department.

Hooray on finding a job and surviving your reading slump! I hope you’re enjoying it. I loved Spin the Dawn and I hope it’ll grip you at some point in the story (but hey, you’re enjoying it!).

    1. Yeah that was really bad luck but hopefully I will have better luck in the future.

Yeah I am so happy about it! I am enjoying Spin the Dawn way more now and will probably finish it this weekend πŸ™Š

  2. Congrats on the new job, and I hope it is going well for you! I am sorry to hear Shadow Frost didn’t work for you — it’s been hit and miss with my friends, and my ARC is staring at me. I hope November is kind to you!
